The Dutch Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) has approved a plan by the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) for the processing and disposal of radioactive waste from the Petten research reactor in North Holland.

The ANVS said the approval of the plan will be valid for three years until 1 November 2022. NRG will need to submit a revised plan by July 2022 for the period following 1 November 2022.

NRG first submitted the plan on 28 June 2019 and then submitted an extension to it on 22 October 2019.

The plan focuses on the processing and disposal of all radioactive waste from the Petten site, including future waste from the dismantling of facilities and buildings.

The plans also details the processing and disposal of radioactive waste barrels stored in a facility at Petten.

ANVS said NRG will be able “in any case” to meet its obligations to dispose of radioactive waste “as quickly as reasonably possible" until 1 November 2022.

The primary activity at the Petten research reactor, managed by NRG, is the production of medical isotopes. It is also used for materials testing and other areas of nuclear research.

Details of the ANVS decision are online (Dutch).
