EC Calls On Belgium And Spain To Adopt Waste Management Legislation
The European commission has called on Belgium and Spain to adopt national programmes for radioactive waste management compliant with EU rules.

The commission said it had decided on Wednesday to send reasoned opinions – formal requests to comply with EU law – to Belgium and Spain for failing to adopt a national programme for radioactive waste management compliant with certain requirements of the spent fuel and radioactive waste directive.

The directive establishes a community framework for ensuring the responsible and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste to avoid imposing undue burdens on future generations. It requires EU member states to provide a high level of safety in spent fuel and radioactive waste management.
