14 May (NucNet): The European nuclear industry says it welcomes the fact that “no urgent actions” questioning the continued operation of nuclear power plants in Europe have been identified as a result of stress tests carried out across the EU following the March 2011 accident at Fukushima-Daiichi.
Foratom, the Brussels-based nuclear industry association, said in a statement today that this confirms the industry’s “strongly held belief” that nuclear plants in the EU are robust and comply with safety standards.
The statement was released following the first day of the two-day European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) meeting in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Industry representatives have convened in Bratislava to discuss the outcome of the stress tests and to consider the way forward, Foratom said.
Foratom said the nuclear industry is ready to help the European Commission and national regulators with the review of the EU Nuclear Safety Directive and welcomes the moves at EU and international level towards harmonisation of nuclear safety standards.
The European Commission founded ENEF in 2007. The forum gathers members from the 27 EU member states.
