28 Apr (NucNet): Exelon, the biggest nuclear power generator in the US and one of the country’s largest electric utilities, is to acquire Constellation Energy Group for shares of stock worth approximately 7.9 billion US dollars (5.3 billion euro).
The new company, which will retain the Exelon name, will have a nuclear power capacity of 19,000 megawatts.
Exelon Nuclear represents approximately 20 percent of the US nuclear industry’s power capacity with 10 nuclear plants and 17 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Approximately 93 percent of Exelon’s total electricity generation is nuclear.
Exelon’s 10 plants are Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, Limerick, Oyster Creek, Peach Bottom, Quad Cities and Three Mile Island.
Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG), a joint venture between Constellation Energy and EDF Group, operates five reactors at three nuclear plants – Calvert Cliffs, R.E. Ginna and Nine Mile Point.
The deal still requires a number of regulatory approvals, Exelon said.
