14 Feb (NucNet): Finnish utility Fennovoima has submitted the environmental impact assessment report (EIA) for the proposed Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant at the Pyhäjoki site to the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, the company said in a statement.

The report contains the assessment of the environmental impacts of the 1,200 megawatt (MW) nuclear power plant.

The EIA compares the environmental impacts of a 1,200 MW nuclear power plant to 1,800 MW one, the possibility for which was assessed in 2008.

According to the EIA report, construction on the Pyhäjoki site is feasible.

Compared to the nuclear power plant assessed in 2008, the environmental impacts on water systems, fisheries and nature conservation areas are slightly smaller for the 1,200 MW power plant.

The EIA procedure will be completed when the Ministry of Employment and the Economy issues its statement on the EIA report.

In December 2013, Fennovoima signed a contract for supply of the Hanhikivi-1 unit with Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom.
