The first nuclear fuel has arrived onsite for the first commercial nuclear power station in Belarus, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said.
According to Rosatom, the first batch of fuel arrived at the site of the Belarusian nuclear station on 6 May. The fuel assemblies are being prepared for unloading and quality control, Rosatom said.
Last week the Belarusian emergencies ministry Gosatomnadzor issued a permit for nuclear fuel to be imported for the Belarusian station, which is under construction near the town of Ostrovets, in the northwest of the country close to the border with Lithuania.

State news agency Belta said the licence had been issued to state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, which will operate the two-unit facility. The licence was for the transportation, handling and storage of nuclear fuel.
Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, said recently that Russia was preparing to supply the fuel to Belarus and send several groups of workers to oversee handling and loading.
Russia is building two 1,109-MW VVER-1200 reactor at the Belarusian site. Construction of Unit 1 began in November 2013 and of Unit 2 in April 2014.
