21 Sep (NucNet): GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has been awarded a contract worth about 50 million US dollars (35 million euro) to provide equipment and services in support of an extended power uprate for unit 2 of Constellation Energy’s Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant.

Nine Mile Point is on the shore of Lake Ontario in New York state. Unit one is a 621-megawatt (MW) boiling water reactor (BWR) that entered commercial operation in 1969. Unit two, a 1,135-MW BWR, entered commercial operation in 1988.

In a statement on 19 September 2007, GEH said the planned uprate would increase unit 2's output by 20 percent above its original licensed thermal power (OLTP) level, which could add as much as 158 MW of electricity to the grid.

GEH said the uprate is to be carried out in two phases and completed in 2012.
