US-based Holtec announced it has completed pre-commissioning cold testing at the €380m ISF-2 interim spent nuclear fuel processing and storage facility at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine.

The company said the tests have demonstrated the “full functionality” of the facility in the absence of any “major issues or impediments”.

Cold testing began on 6 May 2019 and was completed on 29 August 2019. The tests comprised a wide range of scenarios which could be faced by the operator, including normal operation, remotely executed maintenance of equipment, suitability assessment of the auxiliary systems needed to control worker exposure and spread of contamination, and response to incidents and emergencies.
