US-based Holtec International has signed an agreement with the US branch of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to design and engineer the digital instrumentation and control systems (I&C) for Holtec’s SMR-160 small modular reactor technology.

Holtec said the two companies have been working to develop preliminary designs for the I&C systems under an initial agreement signed some years ago.

The SMR-160 is an advanced pressurised water reactor that produces up to 160 MW electric power and is designed with flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen. It relies on gravity as the workhorse to operate the reactor and the completely passive safety systems.

In 2020, Holtec completed Phase 1 of a Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission pre-licensing review for the SMR-160. The company has also begun the licensing process with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission with the goal of securing a site construction licence in 2025.

In November 2021, Holtec signed a cooperation deal with Hyundai Engineering & Construction of South Korea for completion of the standard design of the SMR-160 SMR plant and delivery of SMR-160 projects worldwide.
