Hurricane Sandy: Status Update Of Nuclear Plants

30 Oct (NucNet): The US Nuclear Energy Institute (www.nei.org) has published an update of nuclear plant status in the US. From the 22 nuclear plants that could be affected by Hurricane Sandy, these are the key points:

- Millstone-3 reduced to 75 percent power at the request of the grid operator to enhance grid stability.

- Salem-1 manually shut down today due to high water at circulation water pumps. All equipment performing as designed.

- Oyster Creek declared an 'alert' on 29 October due to high water at intake structure. Experienced loss of offsite power. All equipment performing as designed.

- Limerick-1 and -2 reducing power at the request of the grid operators to maintain stability.

- Susquehanna-1 has been shut down for a turbine blade analysis. Susquehanna-2 is at 75 percent power pending the results of the blade analysis.

- Indian Point-3 manually shut down on 29 October due to grid disruption. All equipment performing as designed.

- Nine Mile Point-1 manually shut down on 29 October due to grid disruption. All equipment performing as designed.

- Vermont Yankee reduced power to 89 percent at request of grid operator.

- Seabrook has been restarting following refueling outage.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said all nuclear plants remain in a safe condition, with emergency equipment available if needed and NRC inspectors on-site.

The NRC has inspectors providing around-the-clock coverage at all of the plants that could experience effects of Hurricane Sandy.
