The operator of the Civaux nuclear power station in central France has demonstrated a commitment to safety, but should strengthen its management of plant modifications and improve its operating experience programme and the implementation of corrective actions, an International Atomic Energy Agency team said.

The Operational Safety Review Team (Osart) concluded an 18-day mission to Civaux on 17 October.

The station, about 40 km southeast of the city of Poitiers, is operated by state power company EDF. It consists of two 1,495-MW pressurised water reactor units that both began commercial operation in 2002.

Osart missions aim to improve operational safety by assessing safety performance using the IAEA’s safety standards.

The team noted several good practices including the use of ultraviolet light to disinfect water from cooling towers and the use of smoke simulation masks to improve the realism of fire-fighting exercises.
