26 Jan (NucNet): Unit 6 of India’s Rajasthan nuclear power plant achieved first criticality on 23 January 2010, plant owner and operator the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has announced.

Rajasthan-6 (also known as RAPP-6) is one of two 202 megawatt-electric pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) under construction at the Rajasthan plant in Rawatbhata, northern India.

RAPP-5 achieved first criticality in November 2009 and was connected to the country’s northern grid for the first time last month.

First concrete for Rajasthan-5 and -6 was poured in October 2002. Four PHWRs are already in operation at the plant.
