Foratom says it is clear that decarbonisation goals cannot be achieved without nuclear
The Brussels-based nuclear industry group Foratom has welcomed the decision on Thursday by the European parliament to adopt a resolution on the 2019 UN climate change conference (COP25) in Madrid which supports all technologies needed in the fight against climate change.“We are delighted to see the European parliament recognise the role which low-carbon nuclear has to play in meeting climate objectives and in ensuring security of supply,” said Foratom director-general Yves Desbazeille. Both the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the International Energy Agency have made it clear that decarbonisation goals cannot be achieved without nuclear energy, Foratom said. The European commission has confirmed that nuclear will form the backbone of a carbon-free European power system, together with renewables.
