27 Aug (NucNet): China needs to exploit Hong Kong’s “unique position and experience” if it is to ensure the long-term development and sustainability of its nuclear energy programme, the Hong Kong Nuclear Society has said.

In an interview with NucNet, society member Vincent Ho said Hong Kong has been vocal in expressing its views and has been trying to influence China’s decision-making process on nuclear energy. Mr Ho said because of Hong Kong’s “different political system” it is in a position to provide insights in areas such as public outreach, stakeholder engagement and off-site contingency planning.

In the interview, Mr Ho also talks about nuclear safety and security in China, the country’s ambitious R&D programme, and the challenges China is facing as it aims for a four-fold increase in nuclear capacity by 2020.
