11 Jul (NucNet): The UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has announced that its preferred bidder for the 1.3 billion pounds-a-year (GBP) (2.5 billion US dollars, 1.6 billion euro) contract to decommission the Sellafield nuclear site in north-west England is Nuclear Management Partners, a consortium consisting of Washington International Holdings, British engineering group Amec and Areva NC.
The NDA said today it will now begin “a period of contract finalisation” with Nuclear Management Partners before a decision on the award of the contract is made in October 2008. The selection of Nuclear Management Partners follows “an extensive competition process” in accordance with EU procurement rules, the NDA said.
The contract will initially offer business to the value of around GBP 1.3 billion a year with associated fees of approximately GBP 50 million per annum, subject to performance.
The contract would be awarded for a period of five years with the potential for extensions, subject to performance, to a total of 17 years.
The NDA invited four bidders to submit final tenders. They were: CH2M HILL International Nuclear Services; Fluor Limited in partnership with Toshiba; SBB Nuclear (consisting of Serco Holdings, Bechtel Management Company and BWXT Nuclear Services); and Washington Group International with AMEC and Areva NC.
The work covers four nuclear sites – Sellafield, Calder Hall, Windscale and Capenhurst – that have supported the nuclear defence and civil nuclear power programmes since the 1940s.
