22 May (NucNet): Gary Gates has been elected as chairman of the board of the US Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).
Mr Gates, who is also president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Omaha Public Power District, was elected at the NEI’s annual Nuclear Energy Assembly in Washington earlier this week. He succeeds John Rowe, chairman, president and CEO of Exelon Corp., who remains on NEI’s board and executive committee.
The Omaha Public Power District owns and operates the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant in the state of Nebraska. Mr Gates is also a member of the boards of the US Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
William Johnson, chairman, president and CEO of Progress Energy Inc., succeeds Mr Gates as the NEI’s vice-chairman.
Also at the Assembly, Oliver Kingsley was honoured with the Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award. The award is given by the organisations representing the businesses and professionals involved in commercial nuclear technologies in recognition of statesmanlike contributions to the many aspects of the field.
Mr Kingsley is a member of the boards of McDermott International and the FPL Group. He retired in 2004 as president and CEO of Exelon Corp., where he was instrumental in implementing the merger between Commonwealth Edison, PECO and AmerGen that resulted in Exelon becoming the country’s largest nuclear plant operator, with 17 reactor units in three states.
