1 Jun (NucNet): Shian-Jang Su was sworn in as minister and chairman of the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) in Taiwan on 21 May 2007.
Dr Su, 62, who previously served three years as deputy minister of the AEC, succeeded Min-Shen Ouyang who retired on the same day. Dr Su was appointed by the new head of Taiwan’s Executive Yuan (cabinet), Premier Chun-hsiung Chang.
AEC is the governing authority of all atomic energy related affairs in Taiwan. Nuclear reactor safety and radiation protection are two of its major regulatory responsibilities.
Dr Su holds an MS in nuclear science from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and has a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US.
He has held a number of senior research and teaching posts and prior to becoming a member of Taiwan’s cabinet in 2004 he served two years as director of AEC’s radiation protection department.
Following his appointment as AEC chairman, Dr Su urged colleagues to be innovative, energetic and to continue placing a premium on safety and service.
