13 Oct (NucNet): Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) has signed a contract with Alstom Power Sweden for the supply and installation of a new generator for unit two of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.
The new generator is expected to be in use in the summer of 2009 and the total replacement cost is about 20 million euros (25 million US dollars). It is water-cooled and uses the same technology as the existing generator at Olkiluoto-2, which was installed in 1994.
However, TVO’s senior vice-president of power plant engineering, Jarmo Tanhua, said the new generator’s nominal capacity and efficiency was greater.
Olkiluoto-2, an 860-megawatt boiling water reactor, was first connected to the grid in February 1980.
