Industrial companies from the nuclear and maritime sectors have launched a European association to support the development of advanced nuclear applications for maritime transport and coastal areas, a statement to media said.

The Neumar association was formally created on 3 June 2026 and will focus on nuclear innovation for the maritime sector, the statement said.

The association said its aim is to help reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport while supporting competitiveness, sovereignty and energy security in Europe.

Neumar brings together industrial, institutional and financial organisations from France and other European countries.

The association said it wants Europe to become “a pioneer in maritime nuclear solutions” with international potential.

According to the statement, its first areas of work will include the development of infrastructure adapted to maritime needs, work on regulatory and financial frameworks for safe deployment, and support for cooperation between Europe’s nuclear and maritime sectors.

Neumar said its activities will use the experience and resources of its members and will follow international standards for nuclear safety, security and non-proliferation.
