2 Feb (NucNet): A joint venture company has been launched to further the potential construction of two reactor units at the US Comanche Peak nuclear plant in the state of Texas.
Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and US utility Luminant said today that the joint venture will be known as the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Company. Luminant has an 80 percent share in the company and MHI holds 12 percent.
The new company was originally expected to be formed by the end of 2008. It will fund project development costs during the period up to the issuing of combined licences to build and operate two MHI US-Advanced Pressurised Water Reactor (US-APWR) units to be known as Comanche Peak-3 and -4.
Luminant chose the US-APWR design for the units in March 2007. MHI submitted an application to have the design certified by US nuclear regulators in December 2007. The application is now under review – a process expected to continue until at least 2011.
Details are available on MHI’s web site (www.mhi.co.jp/en).
