NRC Accepts Point Beach Renewal Application For Review
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for review an application from NextEra Energy to renew for another 20 years the operating licences of Units 1 and 2 at the two-unit Point Beach nuclear station in Wisconsin.

NextEra submitted its subsequent licence renewal application on 16 November 2020. The NRC said accepting the application for review, or “docketing” it, does not indicate whether the commission will approve or reject the request.

NextEra is seeking a subsequent renewal for the Point Beach units. The NRC approved the initial licence renewal in December 2005, with Unit 1 currently licensed to operate until 5 October 2030 and Unit 2 until 8 March 2033.

The new licence renewal would see Unit 1 operate until 2050 and Unit 2 until 2053.

Both Point Beach plants are 591-MW Westinghouse pressurised water reactor units. Pont Beach-1 began commercial operation in December 1970 and Point Beach-2 in October 1972.
