17 Oct (NucNet): The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has made available the public version of a combined construction and operating licence (COL) application for two new reactor units at the South Texas Project nuclear power plant site in Texas.

The applicants, NRG Energy and South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company, submitted the application and associated information on 24 September 2007. It was the first licence application submitted to the NRC for a new nuclear plant in the US in 29 years.

The total rated capacity of the planned new units, South Texas Project-3 and -4, will equal or exceed 2,700 megawatts. NRG said it expects to bring the units on line in 2014 and 2015.

NRG has chosen General Electric’s advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) technology for the new units. Four such units have been successfully commissioned in Japan, with another three under construction in Taiwan and Japan.

The NRC is carrying out an initial check of the application to determine whether it contains sufficient information required for a formal review.

The application is on the NRC website (www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/col.html).
