The Pickering nuclear power station, where six reactors are due for closure.
Nuclear-based solutions may be the cheapest option for closing a looming supply gap in Ontario, Canada, providing energy at 25% less cost to ratepayers than the province’s current system, according to a report prepared for the Power Workers’ Union. The report says an integrated, nuclear-based solution could provide power at a cost of CAD123/MWh (USD96.50/MWh). This low-cost nuclear-based solution would involve integrating hydrogen, flexible load management infrastructure, demand side management and demand response to reduce the need for peaking gas plants. This, in turn, creates more efficient use of transmission and distribution assets.
