South Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission approved an application to permanently shut down the Wolsong-1 nuclear power reactor, although the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party and the labour union of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) are moving to take a legal action against the commission and its members.The shutdown application was made by state-controlled KHNP, the country’s nuclear reactor operator, in February.The 661-MW Candu-6 pressurised heavy water reactor started commercial operation in April 1983. After the end of its 30-year design life, it was allowed to operate for an additional 10 years until 2022. But in June, KHNP decided to close it down early, citing a lack of economic feasibility.
