8 Feb (NucNet): Russia and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The MoU was signed on 3 February 2010 between Russian state nuclear company Rosatom and Argentina’s Ministry of Federal Planning, Investment and Services.

Rosatom said the agreement means it will provide Argentina with technical information related to the possible construction of Russian VVER nuclear power plants in Argentina.

The MoU also provides for cooperation in nuclear fuel cycle research and development.

Argentina has two commercially operational nuclear units, Atucha-1 and Embalse-1. Construction of the second unit at Atucha started in 1980, but was suspended in 1984 due to lack of funding. Construction resumed in 2006 and the unit is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2011.
