19 May (NucNet): Russia and Japan have concluded a nuclear cooperation agreement and say there will also be bilateral cooperation in uranium exploration, and building nuclear power plants.
The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said the agreement was signed on 12 May 2009 by Japan’s foreign affairs minister Hirofumi Nakasone and the director-general of Russia’s Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sergei Kiriyenko.
JAIF said the agreement, signed during a visit to Japan by Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin, will take effect after ratification by legislators in both countries.
In a separate development on 12 May, the Japan-based Toshiba Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Russia’s Techsnabexport (TENEX), the uranium enrichment services subsidiary of state-owned Atomenergoprom.
Under the MOU, both countries will consider the potential for developing a joint global nuclear fuel-supply business.
