30 Nov (NucNet): Russia and Ukraine are to start work on a proposal for the delivery of components for the possible completion of units 3 and 4 at the Khmelnitski nuclear power plant.
Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) said on 28 November 2007 that a sub-committee of the Ukrainian-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission has asked for a proposal on the delivery of components from Russia to Ukraine to be ready by 1 May 2008.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Khmelnitski-3 is scheduled to be connected to the grid in 2015 and Khmelnitski-4 in 2016. The IAEA lists both units as under construction.
The sub-committee also asked Ukrainian representatives to draft “all necessary documents” by 1 June 2008 for Ukraine’s involvement in an international uranium enrichment centre in Siberia.
Russia announced plans to construct the centre in 2006, calling it a first step towards ensuring access to nuclear energy while guaranteeing the non-proliferation regime would not be violated.
Russia and Ukraine also said they were committed to cooperating on the use of new uranium mining and enrichment technologies, and the development of zirconium production, Rosatom said.
