22 Oct (NucNet): Russia has signed an agreement that could lead to the construction of a two-unit nuclear power plant in Venezuela.
The agreement was signed in Moscow on 15 October 2010 by Sergei Kiriyenko, the director-general of Russia’s federal nuclear energy agency Rosatom, and Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela’s minister of foreign affairs.
Rosatom said the agreement provides for the turnkey construction of a twin reactor nuclear power plant based on Russia’s VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors.
The agreement also allows for construction of a research reactor for the production of radioisotopes for use in medicine and agriculture.
