15 Apr (NucNet): Russia’s state nuclear energy company Atomenergoprom has confirmed the delivery of the first batch of natural uranium pellets to India under a contract signed in February 2009.
Atomenergoprom said Russian nuclear fuel manufacturer TVEL supplied the first batch of 30 tonnes of pellets on 8 April 2009 for India’s pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs).
Under a separate contract, the first batch of pellets from Russia for the two boiling water reactor (BWR) units at India’s Tarapur nuclear plant is scheduled for delivery in the summer of this year, Atomenergoprom said. Russia has supplied pellets for Tarapur on two previous occasions.
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India has said previously that the PHWR units that will use the uranium are under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
