26 Apr (NucNet): South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries has won a 350 million US dollar (257 million euros) contract to supply two reactor vessels and four steam generators for new nuclear units in China.
The contract is with Westinghouse Electric Company, which is providing four new AP1000 reactor units for eastern China, two at Sanmen in Zhejiang province and two at Haiyang in Shandong province.
The Korea Atomic Industrial Forum said the two companies had signed a letter of intent in Shanghai on 24 April 2007 during a forum on nuclear generation technology.
The state-run China National Nuclear Corporation will pay an undisclosed amount to Doosan for the transfer of nuclear reactor technology.
Doosan’s chief executive officer Lee Nam-doo said he believed the deal with Westinghouse would be a stepping stone into China’s nuclear energy market. He said it would give Doosan “the upper hand” in more Chinese civilian nuclear projects.
In March 2007 Westinghouse and consortium partner the Shaw Group formally signed a framework agreement to provide China with the four reactor units.
