STUK Director-General Gets IAEA Safeguards Post

8 Mar (NucNet): Tero Varjoranta, who heads the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has been appointed deputy director-general for safeguards at the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Finnish government and STUK said in a joint statement. He will begin work at the IAEA in October.

Mr Varjoranta became director-general of STUK in February 2012. He was previously director of the division of nuclear fuel cycle and waste technology at the IAEA, while on a leave of absence from STUK from 2010 until he returned to STUK in 2012.

He also chairs the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (Esnreg).
