7 Apr (NucNet): The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has launched a cross-border radiation protection and research project for the Arctic regions of Finland, Russia and Norway following a meeting held on 6 and 7 April 2007 in Finland.
The project, known as the Collaboration Network on EuroArctic Environmental Radiation Protection and Research (CEEPRA), is to study the state of radioactive contamination in terrestrial and marine ecosystems in the “EuroArctic” region, notably in northern Finland, Norway, the Kola peninsula in Russia and Barents Sea.
The three-year project will also aim to improve emergency preparedness and risk assessment in the case of nuclear accidents.
The results of radioactive contamination studies will also provide up-to-date information on the occurrence of radioactive substances in the food chain and Arctic environments.
Coordinated by STUK, the project also includes partners such as the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI) from Russia, the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA), the Finnish Meteorological Institute and Pöyry Finland Oy.
STUK spokesperson Ari Leppänen said that the first CEEPRA report would be available during winter 2011.
