Spain’s Trillo-1 and Cofrentes nuclear power plants have announced “positive” operational results in 2019, according to industry group Foro Nuclear.

The 1,003-MW pressurised water at Trillo-1 near Guadalajara generated 8.46 TWh, an increase of 2.2% over 2018’s result, operator CNAT said.

Cofrentes, a 1,064-MW boiling water reactor near Valencia, produced a total of 8.39 TWh in 2019, slightly less than the preceding year, but representing 3.4% of the Spanish electricity generation, according to data from the national grid operator REE.

Both stations have now operated more than 10 years without automatic reactor shutdowns, Foro Nuclear said.

Earlier data showed the nuclear share of electricity production in Spain was approximately 21.4% of the country’s electricity in 2019, making it the leading source of generation.

The country’s seven nuclear plants produced 55.8 TWh in 2019, a figure 4.9% higher than in 2018. Nuclear operated for 90% of the time during 2019, the most of any energy type.
