15 Apr (NucNet): The UK government today published a list of 11 potential sites for a first wave of new nuclear power plants in the country and has invited comments from the general public.
The sites which include mainly existing nuclear plant locations, are: Hartlepool in Durham, Heysham in Lancashire, Dungeness in Kent, Sellafield in Cumbria, Kirksanton in Cumbria, Braystones in Cumbria, Wylfa in Anglesey, Oldbury in Gloucestershire, Hinkley Point in Somerset, Bradwell in Essex and Sizewell in Suffolk.
Comments on the sites can be made until 14 May 2009.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change said all sites had been “vetted to make sure they are realistic sites for a nuclear power station, they could be up and running by 2025 and that the nominator has raised public awareness of their intention to nominate”.
Details are available on a special website – ‘Choosing sites for new nuclear power stations’ (http://www.nuclearpowersiting.decc.gov.uk).
