UK Revival ‘Essential’, Says Areva NP CEO

7 Sep (NucNet): Revival of the UK’s nuclear energy programme is absolutely essential for Areva NP, said the company’s president and chief executive officer Luc Oursel.

Speaking at the World Nuclear Association’s Annual Symposium in London yesterday, Mr Oursel, CEO of the French nuclear vendor, said the UK could be the first country in Europe to relaunch a nuclear power programme on a large scale.

He said success in the UK could lead other European countries planning to phase out nuclear power to reconsider.

The UK’s success in relaunching its nuclear power programme is also important to demonstrate the economic competitiveness of nuclear power, Mr Oursel said. The success of the pre-licensing process will be particularly important in helping other countries decide on new build, he added.

A public consultation on whether to approve new nuclear build in the UK is under way, with public meetings planned in various cities across the UK on 8 September 2007.
