3 Nov (NucNet): Westinghouse Electric Company has signed a contract with Barseback Kraft AB to support the first dismantling of a commercial nuclear power plant in Sweden by segmenting the reactor pressure vessel internals at the dual-unit Barseback nuclear station. Barseback is an ABB-designed boiling water reactor station in the south of Sweden. Barsebäck-1 closed on 30 November 1999 and Barseback-2 on 31 May 2005. The work will significantly reduce the amount of radioactivity remaining in the plant since operation stopped and facilitate safe dismantling of the remainder of its components, the company said. Westinghouse will use specifically designed equipment fabricated and tested at its facilities in Vasteras, Sweden. The project will begin immediately and is expected to take about four years to complete.
