1 Dec (NucNet): Preparatory work on the Baltic nuclear power plant in Kaliningrad is on schedule with the concrete foundation for the first reactor unit likely to be laid in April 2011, Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has said.
Sergei Budilin, director of Rosatom's capital projects, said in statement that work started at the plant on 25 February 2010 and remained on schedule.
The project will consist of two 1,200-megawatt VVER nuclear units. The first unit is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016 and the second in 2018.
Rosatom says the new plant will make the Kaliningrad region independent from electricity and gas imports.
The plant site is near the town of Neman in the northeast of the Kaliningrad oblast (province), which is a Russian exclave that lies between Lithuania and Poland.
