11 Jul (NucNet): China's National Nuclear Safety Administration has approved preparations for the Fangchenggang-1 nuclear unit in the southern province of Guangxi to begin cold testing after a recent safety inspection, project owner China General Nuclear Power Group said.

Fangchenggang-1, construction of which began in July 2010, is scheduled to carry out cold and hot testing this year and to connect to the electricity grid in March 2015. The pressurised water reactor is expected to begin commercial operation in July 2015.

Fangchenggang-1, is a domestically developed CPR1000 unit with a capacity of 1,080 megawatts. The CPR1000 is the standardised design derived from the Areva-supplied PWRs at Ling Ao and Daya Bay in Guangdong province.
