The UK’s Environment Agency is seeking feedback on applications for three environmental permits required for operation of the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk, eastern England.

The three permit applications were submitted to the Environment Agency last month. They cover the controls that need to be put into place to ensure high standards of environmental protection during commissioning, operation and decommissioning.

The three permits sought are for disposals and discharges of radioactive waste; operation of standby power supply systems using diesel generators; and discharge of cooling water and liquid effluent into the North Sea.

Consultations on the three permit applications are running at the same time to give people a clear opportunity to find out about all the relevant information through one process, the agency said.

The consultation will run from 6 July 2020 for 12 weeks.

EDF SZC Company, a subsidiary of France’s state-run utility and nuclear operator EDF, is looking to build two new Generation III EPR units next to Sizewell B.

In May EDF submitted an application to the government to build the two new units.

EDF owns 80% of the Sizewell C project and China General Nuclear Power Corporation 20%. The Chinese company also owns 35% of Hinkley Point C and 65% in the proposed Bradwell B, where it is planning to use its own HPR1000 or Hualong One technology.
