Posiva Oy, the company responsible for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel from Finland’s fleet of four commercial nuclear reactors, said construction of an encapsulation plant building in Olkiluoto has proceeded according to plan and reached the half-way stage with completion scheduled for summer 2022.

Posiva Oy and Skanska Talonrakennus Oy signed the contract for the construction of the plant in June 2019.

The plant is part of a €500m final disposal facility, construction of which began in June 2019. Construction will be followed by the installation and commissioning of the process systems.

In the facility, spent fuel assemblies will be encapsulated and placed in the bedrock at a depth of about 400 metres.

The facility comprises two sections: the above-ground encapsulation plant for the encapsulation of the spent fuel in canisters, and the final repository deep in the bedrock, with tunnels in which the spent fuel will be placed.
