EDF Applies For Shutdown In 2020, Announces Government Compensation Scheme

French state-controlled utility EDF has submitted an application to the national nuclear regulator ASN and the French government for the permanent shutdown of the two-unit Fessenheim nuclear power station near Colmar in northeast France.EDF said in a statement Fessenheim-1 will be shut down on 22 February 2020 and Fessenheim-2 on 30 June 2020.EDF said under an agreement signed last week, the French government will compensate the utility for the early closure of Fessenheim, because it is a direct result from a 2015 law on energy transition.
