Exelon Generation has confirmed it is permanently shutting down the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania today.

The company announced in May that it would close the single 819-MW pressurised water reactor unit by 30 September, citing a lack of state action in subsidising clean energy.

The plant, known as Three Mile Island-1, began commercial operation in September 1974 and over its life generated over 240 billion kWh of electricity.
