Grid Connection For Belarusian-2 Scheduled For Summer 2022, Says Official

Unit 2 of the Belarusian nuclear power station near Ostrovets in western Belarus is expected to be connected to the national grid in the summer of 2022, according to Sergey Bobovich, deputy director of state-owned utility Belenergo.

State news agency Belta quoted Mr Bobovich as saying that operators have already taken the first steps towards the physical startup of the Belarusian-2 unit with the completion of fuel loading.

The loading of 163 fuel assemblies in the reactor core was completed on 27 December 2021, five days after it began.

Next steps will include first criticality, which will bring the reactor to its minimum controlled power level, Further tests will be carried out alongside a gradual increase in power.

There are two Russia-supplied Generation III, 1,110-MW VVER-1200 reactor units at the Ostrovets site.

Belarusian-1 became the country’s first nuclear power plant to begin commercial operation in June 2021.
