Component is part of hermetic protection system
The inner steel containment dome has been lifted into place for Unit 1 of the Akkuyu nuclear power station under construction in southwest Turkey, according to project owner Akkuyu Nuclear JSC.
The 215-tonne steel dome is part of the reactor building’s hermetic protection system. It is designed to withstand high external and internal pressures and protect against radiation release.
Akkuyu Nuclear said assembly of the component onsite took three and a half months. It consisted of 1welding together 16 separate steel parts.

The company said it will now proceed with completing of the outer section of containment building.
The $20bn (€18bn) Akkuyu, the first commercial nuclear power station in Turkey, is being built by Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom under a contract signed in 2010.
The station will have four Generation III+ VVER-1200 units, with the first expected to come online in 2023 and a further unit starting every year afterwards.
