Japan’s government has delayed the removal of spent fuel from Units 1 and 2 at the six-unit Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power station by up to five years, local media report said.

The process of removing the spent fuel from the units’ pools had previously been scheduled to begin in fiscal 2023.

In its latest decommissioning plan, the government said the station’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, will not begin the two-year process at Unit 1 at least until fiscal 2027 and may wait until fiscal 2028.
