Conference addresses common challenges across the global nuclear fleet
Senior leaders from nuclear power plants and utilities worldwide met in Zurich, Switzerland, for the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) 2025 site vice presidents and plant managers conference.
A statement said that more than 70 delegates from 26 countries attended the biennial event, held on 24-25 September under the theme “Accelerating Progress to Achieve Excellence”.
The conference gave participants the chance to exchange information, share best practices, review industry performance, and strengthen international cooperation, said WANO.
The organisation’s chief executive Naoki Chigusa said industry leaders discussed “individual and collective progress in maximising safety and reliability at plants worldwide,” adding that the interactive programme encouraged sharing solutions to common challenges.
Presentations covered a range of topics, including industry performance updates, nuclear leadership effectiveness, equipment reliability, organisational performance, and lessons learned from significant industry events.
Chigusa said that WANO member nuclear stations had set performance goals in 2019 to be reached by 2030.
He said the conference served as an “important staging post” in measuring progress and in identifying the support and strategies needed to achieve those goals.
WANO is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1989 following the Chernobyl accident.
Based in in London, it unites all companies that operate 460 nuclear power units worldwide, with the goal of maximising the safety and reliability of nuclear power through peer reviews, performance analysis, technical support, and knowledge exchange.
WANO has said it works with its membership to assess, benchmark, and improve plant performance.
